Authoryze vs Stripe Agentic Commerce

How Authoryze compares to Stripe's agentic commerce approach. ACP enables merchant checkout; Authoryze governs a buyer's agent spend with single-use cards.

Published · Last verified

Authoryze and Stripe operate at different layers of agentic commerce, so this is less a head-to-head and more a question of which problem you are solving. Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with OpenAI, is a merchant-side standard. It lets businesses accept purchases from AI agents and complete checkout on ACP-enabled sites using shared payment tokens. Authoryze is on the buyer side. It governs how a user's agent spends, issuing a single-use virtual card per approved purchase with spending rules, human approval, and audit, connected over MCP.

How They Relate

These are complementary more than competing. Stripe's ACP is about merchants being able to sell to agents and complete checkout. Authoryze is about a person or business being able to let their agent buy things safely, with control over how much it spends, where, and with human approval when needed. A purchase could in principle involve both, with the buyer's agent governed by Authoryze and the merchant accepting it via a protocol like ACP. ACP is what powers checkout inside ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and Stripe now packages it for sellers as the Agentic Commerce Suite, which also supports Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. Stripe has buyer-side agent products too. Link's wallet for agents gives a consumer's agent a one-time card with per-purchase approval, and Issuing for agents lets a business issue its own agent cards. We cover the first in Authoryze vs Stripe Link for agents.

When Authoryze Is the Right Choice

Choose Authoryze when your need is buyer-side control. You are running an agent and want to govern its spending with single-use cards, per-agent and cross-agent limits, human approval, and audit, connected over MCP, regardless of which checkout standards merchants support.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol a competitor to Authoryze?

No. ACP is a merchant-side standard that lets a business accept a purchase from an AI agent and complete checkout with a shared payment token. Authoryze is buyer-side. It governs how your agent spends, issuing a single-use card per approved purchase under rules you set. A merchant adopts ACP. A person or team running agents adopts Authoryze.

Which AI assistants use ACP for checkout?

ChatGPT was first, through Instant Checkout co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI, and Microsoft Copilot followed with Stripe connecting to sellers over ACP. Stripe now packages ACP for sellers as the Agentic Commerce Suite, which also supports Google's Universal Commerce Protocol and is live in the US, Canada, and around 30 European countries.

Can an Authoryze agent buy from a merchant that uses ACP?

Not through ACP itself. Checkout inside ChatGPT or Copilot uses the payment method the buyer saved in that assistant, and Authoryze does not plug into that flow today. If your agent checks out on the merchant's own site, the Authoryze single-use card works like any other Visa or Mastercard, whether or not the merchant also supports ACP.

Does Stripe offer buyer-side spending controls for agents?

Yes, in two products separate from ACP. Link's wallet for agents gives a consumer's agent a one-time card, with the person approving each purchase and user-set spending limits still listed as coming soon. Issuing for agents lets a business with a Stripe Issuing account issue per-agent virtual cards with spend limits, merchant category controls, and a real-time authorization webhook, if you build the rules and approval flow yourself. Authoryze is that controls layer already built and reachable over MCP.

Do I need a Stripe account to use Authoryze?

No. You sign up for Authoryze, add a billing card for fees, and enroll the card your agent spends from. Authoryze uses Stripe internally to charge its fees, but you never open a Stripe account or integrate Stripe yourself.
